PGE Baltica concluded an agreement for carrying out a preliminary geotechnical campaign for Baltica 1

PGE Baltica, a PGE Group company, signed an agreement with Geoquip Marine for carrying out a preliminary geotechnical campaign of the seabed for the Baltica 1 Offshore Wind Farm project.

The main objective of the planned geotechnical campaign in the offshore wind turbine area is to obtain preliminary information about the geological structure of the surveyed area. The information obtained will be used, among others, to select the optimal foundation method for the wind turbine towers and to plan the next stages of surveys, including geotechnical surveys for the foundations.

The agreement just signed for the geotechnical campaign is another important step on the way to implementing this investment project. Based on the data regarding the seabed structure, obtained during the surveys, we will create a feasibility study and pre-design the layout of the turbines and the offshore substation – said Arkadiusz Sekściński, CEO of PGE Baltica.

The agreement includes, among others, CPTU probing, soil sampling in the area of the farm and laboratory testing. CPTU probing is a survey that consists in inserting into the ground a piezoelectric cone with a system of sensors recording soil parameters on a continuous basis. Readings from the device will be subject to interpretation so as to determine the geology of the area. In addition, we are planning to perform laboratory testing on the samples taken. The testing will start in the second quarter of this year.

We are very pleased that we may continue our long-term cooperation with the largest domestic producer of renewable electricity in Poland. Our team of experts is fully committed to safely providing the precise geotechnical information necessary for this project – said Richard Turner, CEO of Geoquip Marine.

The Baltica 1 OWF project, with a capacity of approx. 0.9 GW, is one of three projects currently implemented by the PGE Group in the Baltic Sea, located approx. 80 km from the shoreline, roughly at the level of the town of Łeba in the Pomorskie Voivodship. The project already has, among others, a location permit and grid connection agreement, and the first full year of surveys of wind conditions, sea currents and waves is already behind it. The Baltica 1 OWF project will be commissioned after 2030.

Two more projects, Baltica 2 and Baltica 3, which will form the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, are being implemented with Ørsted. The completion of the construction of the Baltica 2 stage with a capacity of approx. 1.5 GW is scheduled by the end of 2027, and of the Baltica 3 stage, with a capacity of approx. 1 GW, by the end of 2030.
