From Polish plants to the Baltic Sea: production of secondary steel for Baltica 2 foundations is gaining momentum

Secondary steel structures are an essential part of offshore wind turbine foundations. They enable safe access for technical teams to the foundation and the turbine. Smulders’ scope includes the delivery of three-level internal suspended platforms. Under the contract, Smulders is responsible for producing 107 units; manufacturing began in 2025 and will continue until mid-2026.

Components for Baltica 2 are being produced at Smulders’ Polish plants in Żary, Łęknica and Niemodlin, with assembly and final outfitting to be carried out in Świnoujście. This is another example of how the construction of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm supports the development of the domestic supply chain and increases the share of local industry in delivering this strategic offshore investment.

More than 200 tonnes of steel structures have already been manufactured under the contract. These are being sent to a Polish galvanizing plant and then to the assembly facility in Świnoujście. Deliveries began in October to Świnoujście and, in line with the schedule, will continue through May 2026, when the entire production and transport process from plants in Żary, Łęknica and Niemodlin will be completed. In total, more than 65,000 components manufactured in Poland will be delivered to Świnoujście.

"As shown by the example of the production of suspended internal platforms, the domestic component of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm includes not only suppliers and contractors from Pomerania, but also plants in the Lubuskie and Opole provinces, among others. In this way, the domestic supply chain for offshore wind energy projects reaches deeper into Poland and is an opportunity for the entire Polish industry, said Bartosz Fedurek, President of the PGE Baltica Management Board. An additional local aspect is the fact that after production, these steel components will be transported to the terminal in Świnoujście, where they will be properly equipped and prepared for installation at sea. Thus, the terminal in Świnoujście – alongside the T5 installation terminal in Gdańsk and the operational and service base being built in Ustka – will, in a sense, become another construction base for Baltica 2, another port included in our project," he added.

"We are approaching 30% completion of our production. Work continues at pace—here in Żary, as well as in Łęknica and Niemodlin. We have completed construction of the temporary facility in Świnoujście and are beginning assembly activities there. I am confident we will deliver the project on time. Production for Baltica 2, the largest wind farm in Poland, is one of our main projects underway across 2025 and 2026. Baltica 2, with a capacity of up to 1.5 GW, is a joint-venture by PGE and Ørsted. Once commissioned in 2027, it will be the largest offshore wind farm in Poland. Baltica 2 will make a significant contribution to the country’s energy transition, supplying clean electricity to more than 2.5 million households.
